Not particularly well informed about the speech making of Obama, we came up with the following things :)

tone: inspirational, sentimental, serious, urgent, and commanding.

audience: essentially “the world” – americans as well as the international community. both politicians and laypersons

we predict he will use the following:
-allusions
-anaphoras
-parallelism
-repetition
-ethos.logos.pathos
we believe his aim will be to persuade people that they have made the right decision in electing him as president, encourage and motivate people who are concerned with the many global problems, inspire faith in the USA, propose exactly what it is that he believes needs to be done, and of course, remark on the state of the union.

AP english: Predictions on Obama’s speech :)

January 27, 2010

In president Obama’s speech tomorrow he is most likely to use these components, neither of us is familiar with Obama’s past speeches so these are very quite raw predictions :)

tone: inspirational, sentimental, serious, urgent, and commanding.

audience: essentially “the world” – americans as well as the international community. both politicians and laypersons

we predict he will use the following:
-allusions
-anaphoras
-parallelism
-repetition: maybe some slogans that he used.

By SHARINAownsyou (*cough cough, Ayo & Nathalie) and AliceSholtoD – WE ARE OBAMA

January 27, 2010

Greetings children who should be doing their homework but who are spending extra time on Moran’s AP English Blog…

We can predict the future, as you already know, and this is what WILL occur in Obama’s State of the Union Speech:

-He will not ask rhetorical questions (thanks for the heads up, Ms. Moran)

-He will mention the recession

-He will use a euphemism for the issues with sending troops in Iraq, so as to dull down the flaws of this plan (in an attempt to make the democrats clap)

-He will use an aposiopesis (pausing for dramatic effect while the audience applauds)

-He will use tautology, most likely with the words “We are” or “America is” or “We will” or something along those lines

-His tone will be formal, persuasive, and will appeal to pathos and logos (it is CONGRESS after all)

-He will not speak about being a ghetto president…directly…

-He will make an allusion to former presidents and their actions (*cough cough* Bush)

-He will personify the United States

Quote from this lesson:

Sharina:  He’ll personify the United States…
Alice: Give me an example.
Sharina: It’s a bit sick right now…but it’ll get better.
Alice: WITH HEALTH CARE REFORMS!

hahahahaha (I promise you, it’s funny)

  1. It will be inspirational, honest, and straightforward – no beating around the bush.
  2. He will make great use of exemplification.
  3. There will be logos and ethos, but minimal pathos employed.
  4. There will be a balance between the steps taken thus far, and the steps still to take.
  5. Topics will include the climate bill, recession, health bill, wars on terrorism, and job creation.
  6. He will stutter at some point.
  7. He will use repetition or anaphora for dramatic effect.
  8. He will quote a president of the past – either President Lincoln or President Theodore Roosevelt.
  9. There is a possibility that he will make a reference to his family at the end of the speech.
  10. The organization will be as follows: Starting with the issues at hand, he will proceed to the ways of dealing with them, and end with comments about the future. Will move from heavy to light.
  11. He will say, “America will stand again” and make other uses of personification.
  12. The rhythm will be evenly paced.
  13. He will say “Whitehouse,” “and,” “or,” “because,” and “the” at various times throughout the speech.

The Differences and Popularity of Natural Medicine and Clinical Medicine in Modern Perception By Emily Johns

November 24, 2009

In ancient times, the answer to any ailment would be naturopathic. From the early Native American tribes in the west, to the Chinese practitioners in the east, you could be cured with a range of herbs and natural remedies. Today, however, upon hearing a sneeze you would be rushed away to a large corporate facility and given a variety of drugs, scoffing at the idea of naturopathy as an African witchdoctor comes to mind. The question is, then, when did this change occur, and why? Why have people stopped this ancient tradition in favour of newer facilities? This is the question that I am intending to answer with my research paper, focusing on the perception of these professions in modern day society.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

November 24, 2009

Throwing your paper in the trash is not a big deal. We “throw away” things everyday, from left over food to broken pencils. In fact, the average person creates 4.7 pounds of waste per day. This is all then “thrown away.” However, where is away? The landfills that are being filled and then re dug? This idea of when you throw something into the garbage bin it’s gone needs to be addressed. By the reduce, reuse, recycle cycle the individual can cut back on the amounts thrown into landfills and in turn benefit not only the planet but themselves as well.
